Tim Burton at the MoMA

MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) approached Big Spaceship to create an an interactive kiosk experience for the Tim Burton exhibition in New York. It would showcase a wide spectrum of Tim Burton’s artwork throughout the year, plus never before seen interviews with Burton. Techniques used in the making of this site were inspired by Tim Burton’s earlier stop motion films (read about our inspiration here).

We constructed physical 3-D model staircases with foam board and filmed stop-motion transitions that would be used to reveal biographical content about Burton’s work. (See how we did it here.)The navigational elements for the site were all hand drawn and animated frame by frame. The sum of these techniques assisted us in capturing Tim Burtons’ dark and whimsical aesthetic. I was so proud to be part of this project. I mean, BURTON! Unfortunately, this project was made when flash was cool, so this site isn’t easily accessible.

Skittles: Experience the Rainbow

Wrigley

I grew up with Skittles and have always loved their twisted sense of humor, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to work with a household name like Wrigley. I dedicated 1 1/2 years of blood, sweat, and crystalized sugar tears into creating a destination funhouse for Skittles fans. Our team was even responsible for also creating the voice of the Rainbow. Skittles.com is a never ending site of nonsense and fun. Since Skittles is known for their innovative flavors, we strategically designed this site so we could easily re-skin it each time a new flavor pack is launched. When the new Fizzl’d Fruits skittles pack came out, we fizzled the rainbow and created a world of bizarro content based on Tube Sock (the Fizzl’d Fruit mascot). The best part…we convinced Skittles to ship the Tube Sock costume to us so we could build custom content for the site from scratch. (Kinda feel bad for the intern that had to climb into that sock though. Pee-yew!)

Microsoft Always Beautiful

Microsoft

Microsoft challenged Big Spaceship to explore the new features and functionality of the latest beta release of IE9. “Always Beautiful” is an interactive experience drawing inspiration from trends and memes over the history of the web. IE9’s unique use of the user’s graphics processor allowed for hundreds of assets on the screen at once with no drop in performance. And with native browser support of HTML5 standards and SVG, the creation could be be generated based on real-time user input and output at any size. Users can create and print their own posters at home.

Corpsify

Big Spaceship

I had the pleasure of redesigning Corpsify, a collaborative art project inspired by a collective drawing method known as ‘exquisite corpse.’ Once made in flash, now powered with HTML5. I’m in love with all of the wonderful, colorful characters that have been conceived from such a simple game.

Land’s End

Land’s End offer a variety of backpacks that come in a number of sizes, shapes and colors and can be customized as well. To this concept, we built a fantasy backpack creator: Packland. This interactive wonderland gives kids an adventuresome way to design the ultimate backpack, appealing to their sense of imagination. This site is chock full of animation, playful environments, and fun accessories.

YTMND

I felt honored when my friend Max Goldberg, founder of YTMND, asked me to redesign his site. I have to admit, I was a tad nervous taking on the challenge of trying to satisfy YTMND’s devout following. I was warned that no matter what I did, everyone was going to hate on it. It’s the nature of the beast. So, I did what anyone would do, I intensionally tried to design the most obnoxious site. I had fun with this project, in spite of the insane response.

Future. Innovation. Technology. Creativity

I was asked by Big Spaceship to create artwork for FITC Tokyo 2009. I was so excited to take on this project. I decided to illustrate a woman sitting a Japanese garden of draped in lace and dangling pearls. This art piece was used for signage, brochures, conference badges, online promotions, etc.

Alienware

Alienware wanted to create a promotional site for the arrival of their M17x laptop. We created a 3D animated celestial experience. Alienware’s all knowing technology detects your location using your IP address, visually connecting your whereabouts on the planet earth to simulate your abduction aboard the spacecraft. Once aboard the ship, you can explore tech specs, design and special features of the most powerful 17″ laptop in the universe.
